Question for Students:
1. Can you brainstorm and describe what a hero is and explain how that hero
has made an impression on you or within Canada?
Rationale
The goal of Unit I: Identity in Grade 5 Social Studies is to develop within students an understanding of Canadian identity, and Canadians today, especially, heroes. While learning about the country, students will develop and practice skills in interpreting and creating information on heroes. Students will research the topic of First Nations Heroes in Canada and will require them to access, organize and present information.
Saskatchewan Education recognizes that education programs must meet the needs of Indian and Metis peoples, and that changes to existing programs are also necessary to benefit all students (Saskatchewan Social Studies Curriculum Guide, 1995). The diversity of First Nations students in Saskatchewan should be reflected in curricula, teaching methods, topics, assessment, and especially within the school climate. The reason for developing the First Nations Heroes in Canada Web Quest is to develop within all student populations, a genuine understanding and appreciation of First Nations people and their cultures. As well, in today’s changing society, the WebQuest can represent a practical mechanism for introducing students to the World Wide Web of information.
