| Information for prospective Honours students | Carl L von Baeyer, PhD Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Associate Member in Pediatrics University of Saskatchewan |
I welcome inquiries from U of S students who would like me to consider supervising their Honours thesis research. My work is on the assessment, prevention and management of pain in childhood, with a current emphasis on self-report of pain in 3- to 6-year-olds. Please feel free to e-mail me to have a preliminary discussion of our shared goals and interests. You can also look at a list of theses I have supervised in the past. If, after this preliminary contact, you think you might be interested in having me supervise your thesis, please give me a short memo (1 to 2 pages) summarizing any of the following information about yourself that you would like to share:
A transcript of undergraduate marks would also be helpful.
- research interests
- research experience (including lab courses)
- experience with children
- plans for the future
- ideas about possible research projects.
The memo should be submitted by 23 April, and a decision will be made by 15 May. My acceptance is of course conditional on the student's subsequent admission to the Honours program which takes place in June. Students are encouraged to contact more than one potential supervisor before finalizing their plans. Normally I will take on only one Honours student per year.
Typically, after reaching agreement with a student I will provide a couple of ideas for possible studies that would fit with my research program, and then decide jointly with the student whether to pursue one of these ideas or one of the student's own ideas. Both approaches have led to rewarding collaboration in the past.
Here is a model agreement between me and my student concerning supervision. The wording will be adjusted to meet individual circumstances.

Carl von BaeyerSupervision of Honours thesis research
I undertake to supervise your Honours thesis research, conditional on your admission to the Honours program, and under the following further conditions:
Meetings -You are invited to join my research team and to attend the regular team meetings which will take place about once a month. Some supervision takes place in team meetings, and you can also arrange individual meetings with me as needed. You will be asked to give a brief description of your progress at each meeting of the research team.
Drafts and rehearsal - Documents of five pages or less (e.g., draft abstracts, outlines, consent forms) can be submitted by e-mail. Longer documents should be submitted both by e-mail and in hard copy. Any presentations to be done (e.g., class presentation, undergraduate conference talk) should be rehearsed in the research team or with me beforehand.
Authorship - If your study is implemented as planned and has interpretable results, we will jointly write up the study for submission for publication. Assuming you complete at least a complete first draft of the article by 31 August following completion of the thesis, you would be assigned first authorship. After that date, I have the option of preparing the article(s) for publication with a different order of authorship. In either case, other collaborators will be included as co-authors depending on their contribution.
Timelines and evaluation - We will negotiate a written timeline for completion of each stage of your work, and you will also be expected to adhere to the deadlines of PSY 472. The evaluation process is as specified in PSY 472.
Ownership of data - The data you collect will be the property of the University of Saskatchewan and will be stored subject to university regulations; any use of the data by others will be subject to my approval.
I hope these conditions will be acceptable to you; please feel free to discuss the arrangements with me. I would like a confirmation in writing of your acceptance of this agreement.
