Applications of Kinematics and Dynamics: Projectile Motion
Module 4: Investigation - Motion of a Projectile
Objective     Introduction     Activities     Submission     Glossary     Worksheets

Objective:

By the end of this module you should be able to:

  • Explain that an object thrown vertically upward experiences a downward acceleration.
  • Recognize that projectile motion can be analyzed by considering the horizontal and vertical components of the motion separately.
  • Explain what factors affect the horizontal and vertical motion of a projectile

Introduction:

When a projectile is thrown upwards at an angle, different variables will influence:

  • the height the projectile reaches, y
  • the distance is travels, x, and
  • the total time it remains in the air, t.

In this activity you will look at how different factors influence the motion of a projectile when it is launched at an angle.   You will be looking at the effect that mass, initial velocity, and launch angle has on the projectile's maximum height, range and final velocity.   As well, you will investigate which factors are influenced by the presence of air resistance.

Activities:

Print yourself a copy of the following worksheet:

Go to the on-line simulation and follow the instructions given in the worksheet. Answer all questions posed.

In your own words, write a summary detailing your findings from this activity. Your answer can be in paragraph or point form. But you do need to expand on and explain your conclusions.
