The Moon Landing of 1969

So what makes a source credible?  I have listed a few things I feel have to be checked in order to determine if the source is credible or not.

1)    Domain name:

-  have you found reliable information from there before?

-         What is the extension of the website?  Is it paid? Or is it free?

2)   Purpose this domain site:

-         What is the purpose of the site?

-         Is the site trying to “sell” anything?

-         Does the site contain banners or advertisement?

3)   Author:

-         What is the authors background?

-         What is his/her qualifications?

-         Author information provided?

-         Contact information for Author provided?

4)   Identifiable:

-         Is there similar material that supports claim like this?

-         Are there links provided?

-         Does it provide scientific evidence?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For example the following was done for each of the links:

It was True:

 http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/ap11ann/introduction.htm

1)     Domain name:

-  The domain name is a U.S government site and I have gotten reliable information from there before.

2)   Purpose of the domain:

-         Since it is a government site, it is not out there to sell anything, its sole purpose is to provide information to the people.  The site does not contain any advertisements or any banners to sell anything.

3)   Author:

-Steve Garber at the NASA History Office.   The author does possess the background knowledge in the area and is thus reliable.  Furthermore, the authors information is provided.   Although the information about the authors contact is not, but can be found thru NASA’s website.

4)   Identifible:

-         Similar information can be found in many different places, so this authors claim is not his own, but is a common one.

-         There are links provided that support the claim and where you can find further information

-         It does not support scientific claims, but thru the links that can be found

Conclusion:  The site seems to pass all of the tests and thus is deemed to be reliable

It was a hoax:

http://www.dc8p.com/html/moonhoax.html

1)      Domain name:

-         It is a privately owned webpage so the author did have to pay for the webpage

-         I have never been to this page before, so I cant comment on the reliable information history

2)   Purpose of the Domain:

-         The main purpose of the domain seems to be just to argue this point.

-         The site doesn’t seem to be trying to sell anything

-         The site does not contain any banners or advertisement

3)   Author:

-         There isn’t any information given regarding the author, it doesn’t state who he/she is, what their qualifications are, what makes them an expert on the topic. There isn’t even any contact information regarding the author available.

5)   Identifible:

-         There is similar material that does agree with some of the claims that this author has made, but there are also some bizarre new ones

-         The author does not provide any links to any other sites

-         The site does not provide any scientific reasoning

Conclusion:  The site doesn’t seem to be that reliable. Although the site is privately owned, it’s sole purpose is not to discuss this matter.  http://www.dc8p.com/ itself is a website, and I’m sure the author didn’t intend it just for this specific article.  Furthermore, the author does not seem to provide any scientific evidence to support his claim. Thus making this site not reliable.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall Conclusion:

Overall the websites that provided support for the theory that the moon landing was real, seemed to be much more reliable then the support for the hoax theory.  They seemed to have more credible authors, provided their author details and had much more scientific reasoning behind their claims.  On the other hand the supporters for the hoax theory for the most part did not write any of their authors names, or qualifications.  Moreover, these websites were mostly on free webpage services that are provided, so the author did not have to pay for any of this.
