Workbook of Applications in VectorSpace C++ Library

This manual, or book, contains extensive and in-depth coverage of FE theory and programming at both an elementary and an advanced level. The chapter headings are:

• Numerical linear algebra
• Optimization
• Variational methods
• Finite element method

The finite element applications cover most of the topics in Zienkiewicz and Taylor and also work by J.C.Simo and colleagues. These include advanced subjects such as mixed and hybrid methods with or without matrix substructuring, contact mechanics, elastoplasticity, and finite elastoplasticity.

The program excerpts are from the VSP finite element library which may also be downloaded from the website.

The authors are rather modest about their work describing it as derivative, which it is in part, but the workbook clarifies and provides a valuable "second view" on the original books and papers, and the connections made between the theory of the examples and the actual programs are very useful.
