Geol 384.3 Introduction to Applied Geophysics

This is a class in applied geophysics for non-majors. The prerequisites are geol 258, math 110 and math 112 or 116. Students other than geology majors may take the class without the proper prerequisites with the written approval of the Dept. The class is intended give the non-specialist an understanding of the capabilities and limitations of the common geophysical tools and an appreciation for which geophysical techniques are appropriate in particular applications. One three hour lab per week is required.

CLASS OUTLINE

Geol 481.3 Potential Field Methods

This is a class for geophysics majors. It covers advanced topics in gravity and magnetics exploration. One three hour lab per week is required.

CLASS OUTLINE

Geol 482.3 Electrical Methods in Geophysical Prospecting

This is a class for geophysics majors. It covers advanced topics in electromagnetic methods of exploration including induced polarization, resistivity, very low frequency, time domain e.m. and frequency domain e.m. One three hour lab per week is required.

CLASS OUTLINE

Geol 485.6 Geophysics Field Camp

This is a two week exercise in geophysical field methods for Geophysics majors. The field portion is conducted in late August - early September just before the start of lectures. Selected targets are investigated with a wide variety of techniques, often with the participation of professional geophysicists from local industry. Students reduce and interpret the data during the school year and write three separate reports on these investigations.

CLASS OUTLINE

Geol 487.3 Geophysical Field Methods

This is two week exercise in geophysical field methods for non-majors conducted concurrently with Geol 485.6. The prerequisite is a class in exploration geophysics. Students in this course do not perform the data analysis or write the extensive reports required in 485.6. A short report and a written exam are required at the end of the field exercise.

CLASS OUTLINE

Geol 882.3 Selected Topics in Geophysics

This is a graduate class in electromagnetic exploration. It is usually offered as a series of lectures (39 hrs) with assignments and a research report.

Geol 884.3 Geophysical Inversion

This is a graduate class in the inversion of geophysical data offered as required and tailored to the needs of the student.
