Dynamics and Conventions of the Use of Space in the Orchestra

In production and workshop experience over the last fifteen years, the presenter and his colleagues in the new Everyman series of translations have attempted to develop some understanding of the dynamics of the Greek theatre shape, and of how the tragedians might have used spatial relationships inside the performance area to complement their surviving scripts. Drawing on selected scenes from Aischylos and Sophokles, this workshop will demonstrate some of the ways in which positioning and movement within the orchestra can be used to show the audience the fluctuations of power relationships and the interaction between characters, when scenes are blocked within the context of an understanding of the performance conventions of Athenian tragedy.
