New Technologies: A Challenge for Researchers
Technological developments are occurring so rapidly that it is difficult to predict
what the
situation will be in a year's time. Rather than discussing projects still under
development, however, I will concentrate on those structures that are available
and that offer a framework to those who are active in the field of theatre
research. General areas that I will address include:
- a general overview of the (worldwide) state of affairs with the use of
computers and networks
- the specific needs and tasks for the universities and their libraries
(Here I will stress the historical analogy of another period of
technological innovation with an enormous impact, the bookprinting process,
marking the end of the Middle Ages.)
- a description of the network already
existent for the use of colleagues all over the globe: FIRT
(International Federation for Theatre Research), SIBMAS (International
Association of Libraries and Museums of the Performing Arts), ASTR (American
Society for Theatre Research), and others.
