Convergent margins are among the most dynamic and complex tectonic systems on earth. In addition to reshaping the lithosphere and influencing asthenosphere dynamics, they can also have a profound effect on the biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmospheric circulation. These margins are not static entities, but rather are dynamic systems that react to both large-scale changes in plate tectonics and more local factors such as focused vigorous erosion. Elucidating the processes that govern the development of convergent margins is critical to our understanding of plate tectonics and the various other interdependent ‘spheres’.
