People I Admire

I have lots of friends and acquaintances, but there are very few people who I really admire. Usually I admire them for their courage, for doing something in a just cause that I don't think I could do. Here's the list.

Standing up to Tanks

A 2 Megabyte Quicktime movie of a man blocking a tank convoy.

In 1989 Tiananmen Square was the site of a violent backlash by the Chinese government against student demonstrators. The image at left captured the essence of the time perfectly. It was one man, standing alone, unarmed, in front of a convoy of tanks, trying to stop them from proceding to the demonstration. I have no idea who this man is, but I have to admit that I would not have had the courage to do what he's doing.

Select the picture for a 2M quicktime movie of this incident. The quicktime movie came from CNN's video almanac for 1989. The picture came from the China News Digest site dedicated to this event.

(On the lighter side, this fellow is standing in the crosswalk. Wouldn't that mean the tanks would have to stop anyway?)
