The primary purpose of this web site is to present the non-technical side of my life. In particular, the site will focus on my sculpture in diamond willow. For information related to my university responsibilities see my Electrical Engineering page. One of the courses that I teach, EE 452 Instrumentation, has its own web site.

My specialty in wood carving is working with diamond willow.  I started in this hobby making craft objects such as walking sticks, lamps, bowls, letter openers, desk sets, and other small household items. As my skill developed and interests broadened, I have experimented with earrings, brooches, and Christmas ornaments by "excising" individual diamonds. I have also used some joinery to create a quilt crane (used for hanging a quilt for display and storage), business card boxes and a canoe paddle. (See  More information on the craft items.) More recently, I have developed an interest in more sculptural pieces including wood spirits (faces carved in relief in the willow) and stylized animals and humans.

I have also done some work in other woods such as small jewellry boxes made from purple heart. I am also learning how to use a lathe with the hope of incorporating that technology into some interesting effects on diamond willow. As part of the learning process, I am also doing some carvings in the round using basswood. I have recently acquired a high speed air turbine carver, so I hope to add pierced carving of very thin excised diamonds to my array of techniques.

My other interests include canoeing, backpacking, photography, gardening, and cross-country skiing.
