This is the second of what is so far a 2 element series of pieces that
use a candle motif. The name was inspired by an exhibition in
1995 co-sponsored by the Saskatchewan Woodworkers Guild and the
Saskatchewan Quilters Guild. The exhibition was called Wood 'n' Warmth.
The first piece in the series was made for that exhibition.
This piece is made of diamond willow (the flame and the candle), hornbeam (the wick), sycamore (the mirror) and walnut (the frame). The flame is finished with paste varnish. The wick has black acrylic paint, and is finished with wax. The candle is finished with oil. The mirror has been spray lacquered, and the frame is stained with Watco dark walnut oil. The piece is about 18" high and 6" wide. Note that there is only a thin strip of sapwood on the candle. This is how the piece was found. Note also that the sapwood does a complete spiral around the candle. |
