Pit View

Kumtor Open Pit (07/1998).  Looking NE parallel to the Kumtor Fault Zone, which runs through the saddle and dips at ~50° to the right (SE).  Mineralization occurs in its hangingwall in Vendian carbonaceous phyllites (see lithologies), whereas the footwall built of generally younger rocks ranging in age from Riphean to Tertiary is barren.  The Kumtor Fault Zone is 100-250 m wide and hosts several blocks composed of lithologies derived from the immediate walls or exotic to them, which suggests a complex evolution of this structure.
