Students taking the course must have at least an undergraduate level background in molecular biology. Students who have not taken a recent course in molecular biology are responsible for acquiring the necessary background on their own.

Students must have an understanding of:

Nucleic acid and protein biochemistry - The basic structure of DNA, RNA and proteins. Information transfer in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells - DNA <-> RNA -> proteins
Enzymes used as tools in molecular biology - Restrction endonucleases, DNA ligases, RNA-dependent DNA polymerases, thermostable polymerases
Polymerase chain reaction
