   2.  Mosquito population control    

• Insecticide use is largely limited to disease control for human prevention.

• Control of breeding pools of water:  Mosquitoes require standing pools of water to breed. Removal of standing water from places such as pool covers, saucers under flower pots, pet bowls, and wading pools can decrease breeding opportunity. Empty and clean bird baths twice a week. Clean eaves troughs regularly to prevent backup that can trap water.

                                                       
    3.    Reducing contact with mosquitoes through proper management   

• Stabling horses at night and/or in insect proof stables (dusk-dawn).

• Limit the use of stable lights, instead keep lights on away from the stable to attract vectors away from the horses.

• Remove birds and bird perches from around the stable area.

• Use topical mosquito repellants.                                                                                                              
  

• Run fans to keep air movement rapid enough to deter vectors.

• Use flymasks and flysheets to limit the horses exposure.

• Keep a light on away from the stable area to divert mosquitoes away from the horses.
