Transmission/Zoonosis

Transmission:
- Requires bird hosts to act as resevoirs and competent vectors, Culex spp. mosquitoes for disease
spread, thus, transmission is limited to the vector's season.
- Horses infected with WNV are not considered to be at risk
for disease transmission as they have minimal amounts of circulating
virus, they are considered
dead end hosts.
Zoonosis:
- There is a risk for veterinarians and personnel involved in
postmortem procedures or those handling CSF.
- Horses with acute onset should be suspected of rabies and
treated accordingly, as rabies should be a differential considered in
all WNV
cases.
