Vaccines

Currently there are two West Nile Virus vaccines registered for use in horses in Canada.

"Recombitek" is a West Nile Virus vaccine produced by Merial. This vaccine is a lyophilized recombinant canarypox vectored West Nile Virus vaccine plus a sterile liquid diluent

Fort Dodge (Wyeth) manufactures Killed West Nile Virus vaccine, it is imported under the name "West Nile - Innovator" by Wyeth. [15]

The AAEP recommends the following vaccination protocol:

For previously non vaccinated animals: 2 doses, 3-6 weeks apart followed by semi annual vaccination for low risk areas, and vaccinations every 4 months for high risk areas. Annual revaccination should be done in the spring prior to the onset of the vector season.

Primary vaccination of foals from vaccinated mares should be started at 3-4 Months of age, while foals from non vaccinated mares at <3 months of age. Foals should receive another vaccination at 1 year of age. [3]

Vaccination is recommended for all equids (horses, donkeys, and mules). There is no supportive evidence for pregnancy disruption or birth defects. [14]

Vaccine efficacy is estimated at 95% and is also said to protect against viremia. [14]
