Felidae is
the
family of cats. There
have been experimentally induced subclinical infections reported in
domestic cats and some sporadic infections reported in nondomestic
felids (Deem et al., 2000).
Two
outbreaks of interest in this animal family
occurred in Africa in 1992 and the Serengeti in 1994. The 1992
canine distemper epidemic ended up with a total of 74 confirmed
infections, all of which were in captive felids. Animals with
confirmed Canine Distemper infection included the African lion, tiger,
leopard, and jaguar. Almost half of the infected animals became
ill and 23% died. The most commonly observed neurologic
abnormality was generalized seizure activity, although
gastrointestinal, respiratory and other central nervous system signs
were observed. The outbreak of Canine Distemper in the
Serengeti resulted in 30% of the 3000 lion population being affected
(Deem et al., 2000).
