Canine Distemper has been
documented in free-ranging Serengeti hyenas and in captive
hyenas (members of the family Hyaenidae).
During an epidemic of Canine Distemper in Masai Mara,
Kenya, there was a high mortality rate in dogs but no clinical signs or
increased mortality in free-ranging spotted hyenas in the
area. These hyenas did however show a significant rise in their
Canine Distemper Antibody levels (Deem et al., 2000).
