A Veterinary Student's Guide To
Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus

herd

Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) is a significant disease which is economically important to the Canadian cattle industry.  It is a complex viral disease which has multiple modes of transmission and can be particularly difficult to recognize due to the occurrence of persistently infected (PI) animals which continue to shed the disease but do not exhibit overt clinical signs.  This means that producers can not simply control an outbreak in the herd by culling cows which show clinical signs.  It is important that producers regularly vaccinate in order to prevent the various signs of BVD, which may include abortion, diarrhea, fever, pneumonia and death.
